Lift-Slab Operations
Lift-slab construction raises concrete slabs into position along supporting columns. These operations carry serious collapse risks and require oversight by a registered professional engineer. Workers must stay out from under slabs being lifted, and only essential personnel should be in the area during jacking.
Masonry Wall Construction
A freshly built masonry wall is vulnerable until it cures and is braced. Subpart Q requires a limited access zone on the unscaffolded side of any wall under construction. This zone must be established before work begins, sized to the wall's height, and kept clear of everyone except the workers actively building the wall. Walls over eight feet tall must be braced until permanent support is in place.
Competent Person Requirements
OSHA leans heavily on the competent person throughout Subpart Q. A competent person is someone trained to identify existing and predictable hazards and authorized to take prompt action to correct them.
In concrete and masonry work, the competent person plays a central role.
